Jnanpith Award

The literary award Jnanpith or Gyanpith is one of the highest literary honour in India presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature" in any of the languages included in Schedule VIII of the Indian Constitution. The Award is sponsored by Bharatiya Jnanpith, a literary and cultural organisation set up in 1944, by the late Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and his wife Rama Jain.

The first Jnanpith Award was given in the year 1965. The award carries a cash price of Rs 11 lakhs, a citation and a bronze replica of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, and arts. Prior to 1982, the Jnanpith Award were given for a single work of Author, but after that, the Jnanpith Award is being given for the lifetime contribution of the writer to the Indian literature.

G. Sankara Kurup was the first recipient of Jnanpith Award in the year 1965
Ashapoorna Devi was the first woman to recieve this award in the year 1976.
