Dadasaheb Phalke Award
About Dhundiraj Govind Phalke: He was popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke and as "the father of Indian cinema". He directed India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra. He made 95 films and 26 short films in a span of 19 years.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema. To honour the Father of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the National Film Awards named the most prestigious and coveted award of Indian Cinema after him. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award is given to a film personality for his/her outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The award comprises of a Swarna Kamal, a cash Prize of Rs. 10,00,000/- (Rupees Ten Lakhs) and a shawl.
The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani, who was honoured at the 17th National Film Awards. As of 2015, there have been 47 awardees. Among those, actor Prithviraj Kapoor is the sole posthumous recipient.
